A TRIBUTE TO KARL LAGERFELD HELD IN PARIS

Jeudi 20 juin, les maisons CHANEL, FENDI (LVMH) et KARL LAGERFELD ont rendu conjointement hommage à Karl Lagerfeld lors d’une célébration conçue, scénographiée et mise en scène par Robert Carsen. 

Les multiples facettes de cet homme hors du commun ont été évoquées au travers d’un patchwork de vidéos réalisées tout au long de sa vie, entremêlées de témoignages de personnalités qui l’ont côtoyé, ainsi que de généreuses contributions « live » d’acteurs, de musiciens, de danseurs de grand talent dont il admirait le travail et qui ont interprété les musiques et la littérature qu'il a tant aimées.

Thursday, 20 June, the Houses of CHANEL, FENDI (LVMH) and KARL LAGERFELD all came together to pay tribute to Karl Lagerfeld at a celebration designed, directed and staged by Robert Carsen.

The many facets of this extraordinary man were evoked through a tapestry of videos filmed throughout his life, interspersed with testimonials from people who knew him, as well as the generous “live” contributions of highly talented actors, musicians, dancers who interpreted some of the music and literature Karl loved so much.

Les actrices Tilda Swinton, Fanny Ardant, Cara Delevingne et Helen Mirren, amies de Karl Lagerfeld, ont lu et joué des extraits d’oeuvres de ses auteurs préférés, tels que Virginia Woolf, Stéphane Mallarmé, Colette et Edith Sitwell. Elles ont aussi évoqué ses meilleurs traits d’esprit et les plus brillantes préfaces qu’il a écrites.

Actresses Tilda Swinton, Fanny Ardant, Cara Delevingne and Helen Mirren, friends of Karl Lagerfeld, recited and read excerpts from works by his favourite authors, such as Virginia Woolf, Stéphane Mallarmé, Colette and Edith Sitwell.

Le danseur de Jookin Lil Buck, le violoniste Charlie Siem (qui a interprété Paganini, l’un des compositeurs préférés d’Elizabeth, la mère de Karl Lagerfeld), le chorégraphe argentin German Cornejo, accompagné de sa troupe de 17 danseurs de tango et de son orchestre de 7 musiciens venus de Buenos Aires (Carlos Gardel était le chanteur préféré de Karl Lagerfeld et le tango sa danse favorite), le pianiste chinois Lang Lang (qui a joué du Chopin sur le grand piano dessiné par Karl Lagerfeld à l’occasion du 150e anniversaire de Steinway), et l’artiste américain Pharrell Williams étaient également présents sur scène pour offrir en cadeau l’hommage de leur art à celui qui les a profondément marqués et dont ils étaient l’ami.

The extraordinary Jookin dancer Lil Buck, the brilliant violinist Charlie Siem (who played Paganini, one of the favourite composers of Karl Lagerfeld’s mother Elizabeth), Argentinian choreographer German Cornejo, accompanied by his troupe of 17 tango dancers and his 7-piece orchestra from Buenos Aires (Carlos Gardel was Karl Lagerfeld’s favourite singer and the tango was his favourite dance), the celebrated pianist Lang Lang (who played Chopin on the grand piano designed by Karl Lagerfeld for the 150th anniversary of Steinway), and American artist Pharrell Williams were also on stage to pay homage to the man who had deeply marked them and who was their friend.

 Ces artistes - et les 2500 invités présents au Grand Palais pour célébrer Karl Lagerfeld – étaient immergés au sein d’une exposition spectaculaire de 56 agrandissements géants de portraits pris tout au long de sa vie, par certains des plus célèbres photographes, dans un décor inspiré de ses couleurs préférées, le noir et le blanc, rehaussé d'une touche de rouge.

These artists – as well as the 2,500 guests present at the Grand Palais to celebrate Karl Lagerfeld – were immersed in a spectacular exhibition of 56 giant enlargements of portraits taken throughout his life by some of the most famous photographers in a setting designed by Robert Carsen, inspired by Karl’s favourite colours: black and white enhanced with a touch of red.

Les participants ont salué tour à tour l’esthète, l’homme de culture, le photographe, le créateur… un moment d’exception à la mesure de son talent.

In turn, the participants also paid tribute to the aesthete, this man of culture, photographer, creator... in an exceptional moment as grand as his talent.
